A Bit About Me

I’ve always been interested in media and design. From a young age I would sit and watch films with my family and friends. I used to love books too, nice printed stories and glossy paper used to be my favourite above all but as time has gone by my love for reading has converted more towards the non-fiction side of text. I should probably introduce myself.

As I said, I’m currently studying 3 A levels and I’m half way through my two year course. After getting an A* in my GCSE graphic design course I knew I wanted a future career in design and branding. I also enjoy working with film and marketing and the interest I have in media is what helped me get a B grade for my first year of the A level course.  I also do product design, which I got an A in after my first year of A levels and creative writing in which I received a B. My three A level subjects link together really well and combine my fascination in design with my ability in English writing. I enjoy analysing work but I also enjoy producing my own.

I work as a freelance designer in my spare time. Recently I have designed a website for a basketball academy (http://basketballinthecommunity.co.uk/) which develops the skills of younger players. I’ve also done a lot of branding and document layout design for my family business ‘Wiseman Commercial’. I use Photoshop and Illustrator to complete these branding pieces and recently I bought an Apple MacBook pro to fully equip myself with the things I need to produce high quality design work. I also spend £150 a year on adobe creative cloud which allows me access to all of the adobe programmes used for web and branding design as well as professional standard video editing.

My experience in the design and media industry is spread over various areas and organisations. I have worked for Archant design in creating newspaper and print design, Farrows Ltd creating logo and website designs for clients and most recently I was selected to attend a Channel 4 run workshop which looked at the power of advertising and marketing. The workshop was a brilliant success. It allowed me to meet lots of new creative people my age as well as industry experts. I worked on an advertising and branding campaign for the 2016 Rio Paralympics. Throughout the event I was able to develop my understanding in the industry and improve my skills working on set briefs and creating new ideas.

I also spend my own money of magazine subscriptions such as amateur photographer and digital photography as they help me develop my editing skills on Photoshop but also enhance my photography itself. I have always enjoyed taking photographs and film and last year I had a series of my wildlife photographs published in a local newspaper. As well as sending my work to be published by newspaper companies I also enjoy reading local news and also sport news from around the world. I regularly read the EDP (Eastern Daily Press) and The Telegraph.

Away from print, I also enjoy going to the cinema with friends to see various genres of film. In the past year I have seen blockbuster movies such as ‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’ and ‘Kingsman’ as well as films produced by smaller independents. British films such as ‘This is England’ and ‘Quadrophenia’ are both films I really enjoyed watching. I find these types of film interesting because I like to compare British culture in the past to how it is now. I also find it fascinating how directors create different tones and atmospheres without the use of special effects that we see in most big blockbuster movies. Since watching ‘This is England’ I have watched all 3 TV series which followed on from the film. I think the way in which Shane Meadows represents the lives of British youths during the 80’s and early 90’s through individual characters is really effective and I love the storyline throughout the production.
