Indie rock is a music genre that originated in the 1980's. The genre is extremely diverse and contains several sub-genres within it.
The genre was first created in the UK around the 1980's. In this time, bands such as The Smiths, New Order, Joy Division and The Sugarcanes were hitting the number one singles chart.
Originally, Indie Rock was used to describe record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced as it was initially interchangeably used with alternative rock. It then developed into a genre of its own and has become a huge genre over recent years. As it has become more popular it has grown into a diverse area of sub-genre such as lo-fi, shoe gaze and indie pop.
In the 1990's there was need for an accumulation of sub-genres as grunge from the US (Nirvana, Soundgarden) and Britpop from the UK (Oasis, Blur) hit their peak. These merges created new genres and brought new and exciting music styles with it.
As Indie rock continued to develop through into the 2000's, bands such as The White Stripes, The Strokes and The Hives started to form. These artists produced lo-fi, degraded quality audio sounds but still found a way to produce raw, earthy songs.
Indie labels have often been recognised as a low-cost method of producing music. Although, the ever changing music industry has led to Indie music being just as highly publicised as pop, rock and R&B. Indie bands are now able to enjoy commercial success through increased levels of advertising, online marketing and people continuing to listen, buy and download their music.
